How to Maintain Timber, Hybrid, Laminate and Vinyl Flooring

Welcome to the thrilling debut of our flooring care saga! In this episode, we dive into the wild world of cleaning and maintaining hard floors—because who doesn't love a good floor drama?

Sure, your flooring might be a diva with its unique surface finishes, but whether it’s engineered timber, hybrid, laminate, or vinyl, they all share the same love language when it comes to daily care.

Get your cleaning routine right from the start, and you'll have a floor that’s so well-preserved, it might just outlast your favourite pair of socks!

Daily Cleaning
Daily Cleaning

Dust and grit are among the most common causes of surface wear across hard flooring surfaces.

Small particles such as sand or dirt can act like fine abrasives when walked across the floor, gradually dulling the surface over time.

For daily care:

  • Sweep with a soft broom or microfiber dust mop

  • Use a vacuum cleaner fitted with a suitable hard floor attachment

  • Remove dirt regularly, especially near entrances and high-traffic areas

Regular sweeping or vacuuming helps prevent loose grit from scratching the floor surface over time.

* A robotic vacuum cleaner may also be used as part of daily maintenance, provided brushes, wheels, and underside components are kept clean.

Damp Mopping – Less Water Is Better

Excessive moisture can affect flooring joints, edges, and long-term surface stability across many hard flooring products.

The correct method is:

  • Use a well-wrung microfiber mop

  • Mop lightly with minimal moisture

  • Never leave standing water on the floor

  • Dry any wet areas immediately

Only damp mopping is recommended, while excessive water exposure should always be avoided. Steam mops should not be used.

Prolonged moisture exposure may lead to swelling, joint stress, edge lifting, or visible surface changes depending on the flooring material.

Furniture Protection

A large amount of floor damage is caused by furniture movement rather than by cleaning.

To reduce scratching:

  • Apply felt protectors under all furniture legs

  • Avoid dragging chairs or tables

  • Lift heavy furniture when moving

  • Use protection when moving appliances

Furniture should never be slid directly across the floor surface.

Protect High Traffic Areas

Certain areas naturally wear faster:

  • Entry points

  • Hallways

  • Dining zones

  • Kitchen walkways

Using rugs or runners can help reduce long-term wear in these locations.

Rubber-backed mats should be avoided, as rubber may react with the finish and leave marks over time.

Spill Management

Spills should always be cleaned immediately.

If liquid remains on the floor, it may:

  • enter joints or edges

  • soften vulnerable areas

  • leave marks if contaminants remain too long

The best practice is:

  • absorb immediately with a dry cloth

  • follow with a lightly damp microfiber cloth if needed

  • dry the area fully afterward

Prompt liquid removal helps reduce moisture-related surface issues and maintain long-term floor performance.

Final Advice

Correct cleaning habits make a significant difference over time.

The key principles are simple:

  • Remove dust regularly

  • Minimise moisture

  • Protect the surface

  • Use suitable cleaning products only

These basic habits are often enough to help maintain a consistent appearance for many years.

For product-specific care instructions, it is strongly recommended to confirm cleaning and maintenance requirements directly with the product manufacturer, as surface finishes and product construction may vary between brands and flooring types.

Please note that damage caused by incorrect cleaning methods, unsuitable products, excessive moisture, or improper maintenance is not the responsibility of Octagon Timber Flooring.
